They were originally called E.T.'s Favorite Candy

Hershey's and Reese's were competing for the rights to make E.T.'s favorite candy, but they had a problem: they weren't sure what it was called.

Hershey's had been making chocolate candies since 1894 and was already famous for their Hershey bar and Kisses, so they didn't want to give up the "Hershey" name. And Reese's Peanut Butter Cups only came out in 1978--they weren't even on the market yet when Spielberg started filming E.T., let alone ready for prime time exposure!

So the two companies got together, agreeing that Hershey's would make a new type of candy bar, which they called "Almond Joy," while Reese's would create a peanut butter cup. Both candies were sold in packs of three, and each pack contained one of each brand.

The deal worked out well for both companies: Hershey's got their product on the shelves first but had trouble keeping up with demand. And by 1982, when E.T. came out in theaters, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups were already popular enough to be seen in almost every American household!
